Do Whiteheads Go Away On Their Own/Naturally?

The pesky white spots on your face or your shoulders are definitely one of the most annoying skin problems. But before you start to curse the whiteheads and try to attempt all possible methods to deal with it, I suggest you get to know what this skin problem is all about.

Whiteheads are a kind of mild acne that looks like small, white bumps on the surface of the skin. Acne like this is seen when the pores are clogged and it is covered with a layer of skin. That is why it looks white from the surface. The question of do whiteheads go away on their own/naturally is something I have seen people ask most frequently. Read on to find the answers to this question that I have found useful.

Natural ways to deal with whiteheads

The first thing that you need to know is that the whiteheads cannot be pushed away like you can in case of blackheads. This is because the whiteheads are closed inside the pores. You can give the whiteheads some time and see to it if they go away on their own.

However, in most cases including my own, they did not go away on their own. Their treatment can be quite challenging given the fact that they are embedded under a layer of skin. But don’t lose heart as of now as there are ways to treat the annoying whiteheads. The following are some of the methods that I found really helpful.

1. Begin with the hands-off method

I know whenever there is such an issue on your skin, the urge to touch it surely beyond control. If you are thinking to get rid of a huge whitehead, the first thing that you need to do is stop touching the area. Touching the area invites more bacteria, oil, and dirt to clog the pores and this, in turn, leads to irritation.

Popping and picking the whiteheads will do more harm than good so I would advise you to stop yourself from doing it no matter how tempting it looks. Even more than irritation, such acts can lead to permanent scars on the skin.

2. Stay away from wrong home remedies

Home remedies are the best way to deal with problems like whiteheads but the issue with such remedies is that it is too easy to pick up a wrong solution. I have learnt from my mistakes so you better stop yourself from attempting any such steps.

Lemon juice is great for removing black spots but it is too acidic for the sensitive skin at the whiteheads. And if you make the mistake of adding sugar crystals to the lemon juice, you risk making the region swollen. Remove baking soda and apple cider vinegar from your face packs at home if you are thinking to get away from whiteheads naturally.

3. Steam your face with warm water

I did this regularly and it really worked wonders for my skin. Run hot water in a big bowl and steam your face with it. You can even hold a very warm cloth over the face to get the same results.

The objective of this remedy is to open up the pores. When the pores are opened up nicely, the whiteheads that are close to the skin surface gets excrete really easily. I did this method thrice or twice in the week and you can do the same.

4. Apply tea tree oil at night

In case you are considering to get rid of whiteheads naturally, try using tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is a natural anti-inflammatory ingredient which also comes with inherent antimicrobial effects.

Tea tree oil can help clear out your whiteheads if you apply it diligently. I had got a tea tree oil extract from the medical store nearby. I took a bit of the oil on to a cotton pad and applied it directly to the affected area every night before going to sleep.

To my surprise, the results were visible within a week. You can also dilute the solute if it feels too potent for your sensitive skin.

5. Use Witch hazel as an astringent

Witch hazel is derived from a flowering plant and it is widely known for its astringent properties. Let me simplify the word astringent for you: it is a kind of substance that cleanses the skin naturally by penetrating the pores and purifying them.

You will find witch hazel in any high-end medical or drug store in your area. Thinking of how to get rid of whiteheads overnight? Simply dip the cotton ball in the witch hazel solution and apply it twice every day.

6. Use gentle exfoliation on your skin

I have found exfoliation to be really helpful when it comes to the treatment of whiteheads. Exfoliation will make your skin smooth and remove any excessive dead skin cells that have accumulated on the surface. Keep in mind that you need to use only a gentle formula to get away whiteheads without popping.

That way, you will get the exfoliation without causing unnecessary dryness or irritation on the skin. Also, make sure that you do not expose your skin to daily exfoliation as that can make the skin dry and remove all the natural essential oils that it has. That will cause further acne and whiteheads problems.

I exfoliate my face and neck once every week and you can do the same or at the most, do it twice a week if you have oily skin.

7. Always use a sunscreen when you go out

Sensitive skin is prone to whiteheads and acne breakouts under the harsh rays of the sun. I make sure to never step out without applying sunscreen on all the exposed parts of the body.

I use two sunscreens for this purpose: one for the body and the other for the face. In terms of sunscreen, it is important to apply a sunscreen on the face that is specially designed for it. The sunscreens that claim to be suited to be applied all over the body contain ingredients that can clog the pores.

Yes, believe it or not, even a wrong sunscreen can compound your problems of whiteheads!

8. Wash your face at the right times

Are you someone who keeps splashing water on the face at the slightest thought of oil and dirt accumulation? If the answer to that is a yes, then I suggest you stop doing this right now.

You are just stripping your face of all the good oils that it needs. Wash your face once in the evening using a mild face wash. Wash your face after playing sports or working out to ensure there is no dirt accumulating from the excess sweating. Try to use lukewarm water whenever you wash the face.

Wrapping it up

Whiteheads are minor skin problems that should go away if you follow these tips, as they did in my case. Consult a dermatologist in case the problem persists.
