Can Sun Poisoning Cause Swollen Eyes? Symptoms and Treatment Inside

Sun Poisoning Cause Swollen Eyes
Are your eyelids swollen, are the eyes turning red?

It may be due to allergy caused due to the sun. Prolonged sun exposure does not only damage the exposed areas of the body, but it also affects the most sensitive areas, and one of them is the eyelids.

We are aware of the fact that overexposure to the sun damages the skin. However, only a few people know that the sun exposure can also damage the eyelids.

Getting your eyelids poisoned by the sun is similar to the sun burns caused on other parts of the body but the thing that has to be kept in mind is that eyes below the eyelids are also the most sensitive part of the body so one has to be extra careful about the eyelids and the eyes too.

Eyelid burns can be classified as follows:

  • Epidermal/first degree burns: here only the epidermis is affected and blistering is not common. Healing occurs within a week.
  • Partial thickness burns/ second degree burns: These penetrate the dermis along with the epidermis. Here the patient can feel a problem in contracting and relaxing their eyelids. Healing occurs in 3-4 weeks.
  • Full thickness burns/third degree burns: Here epidermis, dermis and the regenerative elements are destroyed. Healing here only occurs at the edges.

The symptoms may take 1-2 days to appear fully on the eyelids and include:

  • Reddish eyelids
  • Eyelids feel tender and hot to touch
  • Inflammation on the eyelids
  • Blisters

As stated, eyes also get affected if the eyelids get sun poisoned, eyes also show symptoms of sun allergy:

  • Burning and itching sensation in eyes
  • Eyes become light sensitive
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Nausea

Staying away from sunlight can reduce the symptoms and can also heal the eyelids. But if the symptoms do not vanish within 48 hours you need to consult your dermatologist.

It is seen that the sun allergy goes by itself without any medical treatment but you have to be extra protective when you step out in the sun because if ignored prolonged and unprotected skin and eyelid exposure can cause skin cancer.

Like other sun poisoning treatments eyelids can also be treated both by home remedies and medications.

Some of the at-home remedies you can adopt are:

  • Take a cotton cloth and wet it in ice cold water, put it on your eyes. Ice cold water soothes your eyes and gives you relief from inflammation too.
  • You can also put slices of potato or cucumber on eyelids, they too give relief from swelling and itching.
  • Aloe Vera also provides a cooling effect, just take a drop and apply it on the eyelids. Repeat it 3-4 times a day for quick relief.
  • Chamomile tea bags also provide cooling. Just place the tea bags on your eyelids and see the results.
  • Moisturize your eyes as sun poisoning makes the eyelids dry. Apply some preservative free moisturizer, they too provide cooling relief.
  • If you use contact lenses, avoid it for some days till your eyelids heal just to avoid any infection.
  • Do not rub your eyes as it may promote infection due to bacteria present on hands.
  • You may also take some medications, visit a doctor if you feel much discomfort.

Bottom Line

It is important to take extra care of the eyelids because damaged eyelids also damage the eyes to some extent.

Treatment of sun damaged eyelids can be done by above-described ones but prevention is always better than cure so take extra remedies while going out in sun.
