Does Sun Poisoning Cause Swollen Feet? Treatment and Symptoms Inside

Do Sun Poisoning Cause Swollen Feet
Yes, sun poisoning causes the feet to swell.

What’s the primary cause, let’s see.

Summer vacations mean enjoyment and lazy afternoons. For most of us, beach parties are common this time.

But wait. Have you thought of the after effects of spending time in the scorching sun?

UVA and UVB rays of the sun damage your skin and make it dry and cracked. Spending too much time in hot weather causes unfortunate sun allergy/poisoning on the areas that are left exposed to the sun, including your feet.

Hot weather causes water retention and temporary inflammation on the feet and make it difficult for you to walk, many times, it also requires medical help.

Reasons for Inflammation and Associated Risk Factors

When you step out in the sun, the heat waves dilate the blood vessels of legs temporarily. Due to overheating, the body is not able to bring the vessels back to normal.

Thus, fluid retention starts due to which the feet start to swell.

Heat also causes rashes on the lower part of the legs. It blocks the pores and prevents the heat from the body to escape.

Other factors that contribute towards inflammation of feet are tight socks, shoes, and clothing. Because of this, the varicose veins typically swell and burst creating rashes and swelling on the feet.

Inflammation of legs due to heat causes exhaustion. In some cases, it is regarded as the heat-related illness when the symptoms turn severe.

Many of us experience lung, kidney, and heart failure diseases too due to fluid retention.

Who Are Most Affected By Sun Poisoning and Fluid Retention?

Adult persons mostly get sun poisoned. However, kids, pregnant women, overweight people, military persons, and athletes are prone to sun poisoning and swollen feet in the summer months.

Adults get swollen feet due to their age as their skin is not able to withstand the temperature of the sun, pregnant women face such conditions due to weight.

Symptoms of Swollen Feet

Symptoms of swelling are visible easily on the legs and feet, sometimes these also visible on the upper part of the body.

Have a look at some of them:

But if the above symptoms are accompanied by fever, muscle aches, diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting, it is highly recommended to seek immediate medical help.

Prevention and Treatment

Swelling of feet due to sun can be prevented, for this, you can adopt the following tips:

Avoid going out in the sun. If necessary, wear boots or shoes that cover your feet. If on the beach, avoid walking on sand barefoot.

Keep yourself cool and hydrated. Water prevents your blood vessels from getting dilated and thus prevents the retention of fluids in legs.

Take breaks from your work if you need to go out in the sun frequently

Apply sunscreen on your feet regularly.

However, if you have got sun poisoning on your feet, treat it immediately so that it may not turn into a bad one.

Give your feet some cool compression. Dip them in ice cold water, it helps the heat to escape and relieves pain too.

Apply creams that soothe your skin, you can also use Aloe Vera, cold milk, curd for this purpose.

To reduce swelling, lift up your legs and keep them in the same position for some time.

Avoid going out in the sun for at least 24 hours so that your skin can recover.

Skin of your feet is very tender. The sun can damage almost every layer producing symptoms that can also turn severe later on, thus protect them by adopting the above tips.
