Can You Get Sun Poisoning While Pregnant? Symptoms & Treatment

Sun Poisoning While Pregnant

A pregnant woman has a long list of do’s and don’ts so that mother and baby stay healthy. On the same lines, elders often advice pregnant woman to stay away from the scorching heat of the sun.

Is there any link between sun poisoning and pregnancy?

Particularly there is no such link between both but studies suggest that too much sun exposure should be avoided just for the safety of the developing foetus.

Pregnancy, Sensitive Skin and Sun Poisoning

A pregnant woman experiences many hormonal changes that trigger the melanin levels in the skin, a condition known as melisma or chloasma or the mask of pregnancy. In this condition, the dark and black colour patches appear on the skin mainly on the face.

Production of hormones also makes skin sensitive, and sensitive skin is more prone to UV damage. This is why elders often recommend women to avoid standing in a stretch as it causes swelling on the feet.

Too much sun exposure causes the skin on the feet and below it to burn causing the blood vessels to dilate. This, in turn, causes fluid retention thus causing the feet to swell.

So, it is better to avoid going out in the sun during pregnancy.

Possible Harms of Sun Poisoning

There are many harms associated with sun poisoning.

Have a look at some of the possible ones below:

  • Causes overheating and dehydration
  • Swollen feet
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Skin sensitivity
  • Development of skin patches mainly on the face
  • Risk of skin cancer
  • Lowers folic acid level
What actually happens when a pregnant lady gets sun poisoned during pregnancy?

When a pregnant lady steps out in the sun, the body gets heated up to protect the foetus. The mother’s blood vessels contract in order to keep the body cool but this phenomenon cuts down the amount of nutrients reaching the foetus, thus causes damage to it.

Sun poisoning also causes dehydration that may cause over-heating of the body, thus damaging the developing foetus.

Prevention of Sun Poisoning During Pregnancy

It is very important for a pregnant lady to understand the risks associated with sun poisoning and what possible measures should be adopted to avoid the sun poisoning:

  • Minimize sun exposure
  • Keep yourself hydrated
  • Avoid going out in the middle of the day
  • Try to wear loose and breathable clothes
  • Carry a portable umbrella
  • Wear good quality sun glasses and hats if stepping out in sun
  • Also, put on a safe sunscreen while going out in sun
  • Take doctors consultation for vitamin D supplementation.

Use of Sunscreens during Pregnancy

Experts advise to use sunscreens as a shield for the skin, but can it be used while you are pregnant?

Studies show that sunscreens contain an ingredient known as oxybenzone that might interfere with the weight of the new born.

It is thus advised to use non-chemical based products and sunscreen, also known as physical sunscreens, these contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, thus are safe to be used during pregnancy and are also the perfect pick for people who have sensitive skin.

Can Sun Poisoning Hurt the Developing Baby?

To some extent, yes!

Severe sun poisoning and symptoms like fever, chills, nausea, and dehydration can lead to low folic acid levels in the developing baby that is an active component in the development of babies brain.

On the other hand, if the expecting mother faces acute dehydration, it causes inflammation in the feet.

This is a bad sign because inflammation in the feet is an indication of fluid retention that should be avoided when you are pregnant.
